Octo is a browser extension made by a freelancer, for freelancers. The
short version: we store the job listings your browser already displayed so
the community can warn each other about clients who never hire. We never
talk to Upwork on your behalf, and your data is never for sale.
What we collect
- A random install id. When you install Octo it makes
up a random identifier for itself. It's how your opened-job history works
before you sign in, and how we can tell "someone used Octo today" without
knowing who you are. It contains nothing about you and is linked to your
email only if you later sign in.
- Your email address, when you sign in (Google or magic
link). Signing in is optional. That's the whole account: no name, no
photo, no profile.
- Job listings you see. While you browse Upwork job
search, the extension reads the listings already rendered on your screen:
job id, title, and the client info Upwork shows publicly (country, rating,
total spent, payment verified).
- Jobs you open. When you open a job's details, the
extension reads the client stats Upwork shows there (jobs posted, hire
rate, open jobs, hires, location) and saves the job so your opened-job
history syncs across devices.
- Basic usage. The extension tells our server when it
loads on an Upwork page and roughly how many job listings a search
session scrolled past. This is how we know Octo is working and being
used. It never includes your search terms or anything outside
upwork.com.
What we never do
- No requests to Upwork beyond your own normal browsing. The extension
only reads what Upwork already sent to your browser for you.
- No browsing history collection. Nothing outside upwork.com is touched.
- No selling data, no ads, no trackers, no analytics scripts.
How the community data works
Client stats from jobs that any member opened go into a shared pool, so
other members can see a hire-rate warning on a job before spending connects
on it. What's shared is data about clients and jobs, never about
you: other members can't see who opened a job, what you searched, or that
you exist.
Where it lives
Data is stored in a Postgres database on Neon and served by a Cloudflare
Worker, both in the United States. Sign-in is handled by Neon Auth; its
cookies live on the auth domain only and are used for nothing but keeping
you signed in.
Deleting your data
Email lpasseando@gmail.com and
your account and opened-job history will be deleted. Client stats already
contributed to the shared pool aren't tied to your identity.
Changes
If this policy changes in any way that matters, the date above changes
with it and the extension's store listing will say so.
